Why Amber Fort is Jaipur's Must-See
Amber Fort is the most visited monument in Jaipur. Perched on a hilltop overlooking the glittering Maota Lake, it is a stunning blend of Rajput and Mughal architecture that took 100 years to build.
The fort's centrepiece is the Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) — a hall whose ceiling and walls are covered in tiny mirrors that reflect a single candle flame into thousands of stars.
Entry Fees and Timings
Amber Fort is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Entry fees: ₹100 (Indians), ₹500 (Foreigners). The Light & Sound Show runs at 7:30 PM (Hindi) and 8:30 PM (English) — tickets are ₹200–300 per person.
Elephant Ride vs Jeep — The Honest Answer
The elephant ride up to the fort entrance costs ₹900–1,200 per person. Most experienced travellers recommend the jeep (₹200 per vehicle, 4 people) for a faster, more comfortable ascent. Walking up the ramp takes about 15 minutes.
What to See Inside
- Sheesh Mahal — the mirror palace. Arrive early for the best light.
- Diwan-i-Khas — the private audience hall with intricate inlay work.
- Jai Mandir — alabaster screens and ornamental gardens.
- Sukh Niwas — the pleasure palace cooled by a water channel system.
- Ganesh Pol — the elaborately painted gateway to the royal quarters.
Combining with Jaigarh Fort
Jaigarh Fort is directly uphill from Amber Fort, connected by a covered walkway. It houses the Jaivana — the world's largest wheeled cannon. The combo ticket is worth it. Allow 45 minutes for Jaigarh after Amber.
